What did you learn and gain from what you have just watched?
1.
Upon watching the vlog all I can say is to
refrain the cultural judgement upon the distinctive pronunciation of various countries
using the same language. You can hear the British girl as if talking to a
knight in the old monarch period as she pronounce those words with discipline
like “I was born with this language, and no cultural influence could change
that” to the point that being distinct among others is not bad after all. Seeing
the American native woman with her choice of words as if casual in all she does.
While the British speaks with a little bit conviction.
“Almost all the letters in the word is pronounced”
Quoted from the English girl in
the video that made the other party a little special that the individuals merge
in a video showcasing the two different cultures bearing the same language yet
varies on the pronunciation.
Describe how the English language is used as a medium in UK, America, and in the Philippines.
English in UK is best described on their
distinctive pronunciations. As my old junior high school friend spotted the way
British refrain using the sound of letter “r” in words. The rainbow is made
pronounce “ainbow”. That sounds silly for a sophomore recognize that particle
of the British way of speaking. As well as in their unique words that seemed so
traditional on hearing it yet significant and contributed a significance in the
course of the history, examples are thee, thy, thou that filled the thousands
of sonnet in the past. One of the exemplary characteristics of the English is
their words used in conversation, taking the example in the vlog, toilet rather
than a bathroom.
American version of English is a little bit
simple, with their melodious accent of continuous words gushing from their
mouth, as if casual in nature.
English in the Philippines is best
described as dignified and par excellence in discipline and strict in its usage
because commonly, English is used in the business domain of the country, as
well as in business process outsourcing and in school, in learning as method of
education and even in writing. English in the country of the Pearl of the
Orient Sea is well dignified, not everybody is capable of being fluent in it,
not even millionaires are fond with yet, and English is a huge advantage if
used in communication all throughout the country for businesses and for
fetching a job. With communication sustains the understanding of the community,
English is sustaining the Philippines for almost two century, with the advent
of the Thomasites, it changes the perspective of Filipinos to excel even in the
world pedestal.
Language Registers and Why it Matters
Define language registers and how are these used.
Language registers are the method of indicating a special formality in speaking varying on the situations, with the people talking to and on the relationship. With regards to the situation, if you are tasked to say a prayer, you are not to use casual words as if you are talking to the Creator and use that words, poor you. You are to adopt the passages in the bible to synchronize the words and phrases in method of praying. When it comes to the people talking to, you cannot simply call your instructor in a class discussion with his/her first name or worst, his/her nickname inside the abode of the discussion room that could lead you to the judgement of being disrespectful. Yet this varies from the culture in some nations that calling someone with their names is not that disrespecting after all, so to include in the notion that language registers also relates the culture. Lastly the relationship, you are not to publicize some words and names reserved for intimate conversations and names.disrespectful. Give your view/opinion regarding the article you have just read.
The articled was so juicy and it made me
realize some thoughts that worth pondering, like the simple gestures of calling
names is a great important thing in language registers. There are some points
that I highly suggest readers to take note.
First, change is constant is not so
practiced in this discipline, like the static registers, all throughout the decades;
you are not to change the wordings used in prayers and some formal government
documents. That is why in the church, revisions are rare to be made, because
the present generation should honour the tradition that our forefathers has
done, as well as in the government, you are not to revised the context of the
document because a plenary would never honour such casual wording that seemed
foolish to the fact in the situation of considering the static register.
Second, keep the stars brightly shining on
the night. Place everything in order; you are not to play with words in formal
letter. What is constantly place in formal and even business letters are not
subjected to change, whether trend dominates the office not the letter. You
cannot simply replace the greeting of good morning into “ hey”. That’s a little
bit crazy right.
Third, Humility at its finest, in dealing
with a Native American, you are not to degrade him/her that he could no
purchase an iPhone and join the trend of the massive and destructive social
media. Learn to adopt, if he/she is still practicing the old traditional thou,
thy, thee; bear with it.
Define Intercultural Communication
Have you been immersed in a foreign land or culture?
As a result what changes has it brought to you?
I beg that I haven’t yet immersed to a
foreign land or culture, yet in a situation that seems alien to me are the
times that I am in Manila. There are places that I seem so bothered regarding
their actions even their way of talking. Pardon if the language used by the
place is Filipino. There was a time I’ve found myself walking through a classic
gelato space in the famed Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, if I could recall I
was junior high school that time.

I don’t know how to speak neither to do. All I’m
counting was I was with a cousin of mine doing the things to be done in that
noble place. It was a tragic happening to me. There was a time in that same
place that we are on our way to the parking space building and the car was
parked almost in top floor and suddenly it was midnight and we should go home
because our place to stay in was in Tondo. Imagine if could still recall the
party was just starting. Duh, in a senior student that time I was so fascinated
that night. I know I has no connection with the language registers yet the
lesson is that there are places that might seemed puzzled to us if we are a
first timer yet, we are to adjust, not just because of humility but to survive.
If we are to encounter a foreigner, try to adjust. It far much better that way
than to complain. Do the pinoy way.
How can you become more intercultural without having immerse first-hand in a foreign culture?
As in experience dealing with foreign
people back then, it is an advantage to educate yourself with experience from
other people. It’s not that hard to submit a query to your instructor what to
do in a sort of emergency cases in dealing with international people. Have
yourself geared by watching vlogs as well as learning various cultures and try
to be simple at all times. Do not complicate things. You can open a canned tuna
with a can opener yet it can still be opened by a spoon. That is branded
Filipino attitude. A Filipino knows how to survive in a tragic storm surge. A
Filipino can easily survive a conversation.
Has there been a time when you have offended someone of different linguistic and cultural background? What was the situation? How was the conflict resolved?
No.
What factor can increase your effectiveness in communicating with people from other culture?
As what I’ve said. Do not complicate
things. Learn a bit of their culture and the language both in words and in
actions.
Using the scale below, how would you rate yourself as an intercultural communicator?
Good;-)
